- Library card
- Canteen menus
- Newsfeed
- Calendar and mail linking
- To-do lists

Do I have to use the UPB-App?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Paderborn University is endeavouring to make as many applications and services relating to campus life as possible easily accessible. The UPB-App is a first attempt in this direction by combining various applications and making them available on mobile devices. You can still use all functions as usual via the browser if you prefer. There are alternative solutions for self-printing ID cards (see chapter "ID card function").
I don't want to create an account in one of the app stores, how can I still download the UPB-App?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
The UPB-App is currently only available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. We are already working on a solution to make the app available to you without the app store. We will inform you here as soon as we have any news in this regard.
Who is the provider of the UPB-App?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
The UPB-App is offered in cooperation with the external service provider UniNow. UniNow is a spin-off of the University of Magdeburg and works with more than 80 universities.
Do I have to register with UniNow to be able to use the app?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
No, you do not need to create a UniNow account to use the UPB-App.
Do I have to log in to the UPB-App?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
To be able to use the ID card function and the mail link, you must log in to the UPB-App with your university account. You can also access functions such as the newsfeed, canteen menus and link collections without logging in.
Do I have to specify my degree programme?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
No, specifying the degree programme is optional. By selecting the degree programme, UniNow can display suitable content. This information is irrelevant for the content displayed by Paderborn University.
Do I still need the PAUL-App at all?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
The UPB-App has a different range of functions to the PAUL-App. So far, it is only possible to link your PAUL calendar to the UPB-App calendar on a monthly basis. Other links to the campus management system within the UPB-App may still be expanded. We will inform you here as soon as there is news in this regard.
Can I use the UPB-App to register for exams and attend courses?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
No, registration for examinations and courses will continue to take place via the PAUL campus management system.
Can I retrieve my enrolment certificate via the UPB-App?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
No, you can still download and print out your certificate of enrolment via the PAUL campus management system.
What does "first semester area" mean?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
The first semester section of the UPB-App contains useful information and links for new students at Paderborn University. From the orientation programme to organisational matters to the student councils - you will find the right places to go here.
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Various external vacancies can be found in the "Careers" section. UniNow co-operates with a large number of companies for this purpose. This area is not activated by default; activation is not necessary to use the UPB-related functions.
If you would still like to activate the module, you must select at least 5 companies that you would like to follow. You will then receive newsfeed content and possibly also push notifications from these companies. This can be cancelled as follows:
- Deactivation of push notifications: Click on the profile picture of the respective company to go to the profile page. Click on the bell to the right of the profile picture to set or completely switch off push notifications for certain content.
- Follow company profiles: Click on the profile picture of the respective company to go to the profile page. Click on "Follow me" to the right of the profile picture to unfollow the company.
The content published by the companies is not connected to Paderborn University. As the careers portal in its current form does not meet our expectations of university-internal app use, we are working on a solution to switch it off.
Who publishes articles in the UPB-App feed?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Paderborn University uses the newsfeed as a channel for internal communication. Here you will receive updates and cross-university information from the central units. All units initially communicate via the "Uni Paderborn" channel (UPB claw as profile picture), which you follow automatically. In emergencies and crisis situations, the university can also send push notifications to all users.
If you have any questions about the communication concept, please contact the Press, Communication and Marketing department:
Is the UPB-App also available in English?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
You can change the language directly in the app. Click on the hamburger menu at the top right to open the sidebar and select "Language". Here you can choose between German and English.
How can I report problems?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
If you have problems with the UPB-App, you can report them in two ways:
- Use the support chat within the app.
In case of problems with the login:
- Write an e-mail to zim@upb.de.
ID card function[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Where can I find my student ID?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
You can find your student ID in the UPB-App under "My studies" after you have logged in with your university account, for further information see.
I don't have a smartphone or can't/won't use the app. How do I get my student ID?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
If you do not have a smartphone or your device is temporarily out of order, you can alternatively print out the ID card yourself. To do this, log in to the Serviceportal and select the menu item "Personal data" under "User administration". On the right-hand side under "User roles" you will find the entry "Student". Click on "Student ID PDF" and your ID will automatically be made available as a PDF. You can download and print it as often as you like.
Can I use the ID card function without an Internet connection?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Yes, the ID cards can also be displayed in offline mode if you have previously logged in with your university account and an active internet connection.
How do you identify yourself for exams in future?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Your lecturer will inform you about the identification procedure for examinations. In any case, you will need a photo ID (identity card or passport). A printed or digital version of your student ID may also be required. Please ask the examiners specifically before the examinations.
How do I get my library card?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
The library card barcode will also be available in the UPB-App from October, 2nd.
All students in higher semesters can temporarily use the paper library card from the summer semester 2024 (until 3rd of November) or the electronic library card, which the library provides via its catalog, see
All students who are new to Paderborn University in the winter semester 2024/25 can also use the UPB-App or the e-library card.
In either case (e-card or UPB-App), the library card must be activated online before first use. This can be done using the matriculation number. The online activation function can be found on the login page of the library catalog or can be accessed directly here:
Data protection[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Is the UPB-App GDPR-compliant?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Since 2017, the app has been audited annually by TÜV Süd. The annual audits and software tests cover the areas of functionality, data security, quality assurance and data protection in accordance with the legal requirements of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the BSI's IT baseline protection compendium. In addition to the certificate for quality and functionality, TÜV also issues an expert opinion for data protection and data security. Further information can be found here:
Will my access data be transferred to UniNow and stored on the servers?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
All requests to the PAUL campus management system are made directly from the app, i.e. from the user's end device. This ensures that the access data is sent exclusively to the university's site and is never sent to the UniNow GmbH servers. The pure HTML code is then sent from the mobile device to the UniNow GmbH servers for processing, where it is prepared or processed in such a way that the app can display it in a standardised format. During this processing, no personal data is stored permanently, but is only stored in the working memory at the time of processing.
Further information on the processing of data within the UPB-App can be found here:
