Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about internet access for the halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk.
FAQ[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Can I use Wi-Fi in the hall of residence?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Yes, but you should use your own router for this. More about this here:
It is also possible to plug a terminal device with a cable into the double network socket labeled D. This is only recommended in emergencies, because then the device is directly on the Internet without a firewall, which a router usually offers!
Do I need a VPN?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Since the ZIM has taken over support, a VPN is no longer necessary for Internet access. If you were using a VPN for login.padnet.de, you no longer need one.
Where do I plug in the cable?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
There is a double network socket in your home. If you want to connect a PC or router to the Internet, you must plug the cable into the left-hand socket labeled D. The D stands for data. The left-hand socket labeled T for Telephone is currently not in use.
How many devices can I connect to the Internet?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
You have a network socket in your home. You can connect one device directly to the Internet using a network cable. If you want to connect several devices or use WLAN, you need your own router. Find out more here:
I can no longer access the Internet since the changeover[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
As a rule, everything should be explained on the following page
If there are no instructions for your router, you should make the settings anyway. The most important thing is:
- Set DHCP / Dynamic IP on the WAN port (no PPTP!)
- VPNs to padnet.de are no longer necessary
If this does not help, please write an e-mail to the ZIM with the following information:
- VO number you received from the Studierendenwerk (if known)
- Room number and building
- Inscription on the socket on the wall
- Manufacturer and model of the router
- Did you previously configure PPTP on the router (if known)
